Cricket: Winning India rights will give Sony 'monopoly' - executive http://mygooglein.blogspot.com

Adding the rights to broadcast cricket in England and Australia across the subcontinent gave Sony Pictures Networks a dominant position in the sport but winning the rights to India would give it a monopoly, a senior company executive has told Reuters.

India’s huge market is a major draw for sponsors and advertisers, who often plan product launches around major cricket events and book advertising slots in advance, which in turn leads to a race between broadcasters to secure content.

Star India paid $757.6 million for the rights to broadcast India’s home matches for the period July 2012 to March 2018. Those rights will be up for grabs on March 27 and could see another round of frenzied bidding from the two major players in the Indian market.

SPN, owned by Sony Corp, lost out to Star India for the Indian Premier League rights last year but have since won the license to broadcast Australian and English cricket in the subcontinent, taking their tally to seven test playing nations.

“The whole idea was to strengthen our overall leadership position,” Rajesh Kaul, the president of SPN’s Sports and Distribution Business, told Reuters in an interview.

“ECB was a very important and integral part of the strategy. While Australian cricket happens during the winter here, cricket in England is during the summer.

“There is a very encouraging trend of other sports also getting traction in this part of the world but cricket is still the largest. And to have that dominant leadership position in cricket was very, very critical for us.”

Last year Star India bid a staggering 163.48 billion Indian rupees ($2.52 billion) to bag the worldwide television and digital rights of the IPL for five years.

SPN, who had owned the rights for a decade, was the only other bidder for the television rights with 110.5 billion rupees but lost out to Star’s multi-platform offer.

ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL

SPN already had five boards under their umbrella after they paid $385 million in 2016 to acquire TEN Sports, which owns the broadcast rights of cricket boards in South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

By wrapping up deals for the Australia and England boards, the network, which also holds rights for this year’s soccer World Cup in Russia, will have over 1,000 days of live international cricket over the next five years.

While the health and drawing power of test cricket has come under scrutiny time and again, Kaul said matches between the top sides in the world was always a big draw.

He cited the example of the three-test series between South Africa and India in January, which drew double the TV ratings of India’s home series against Sri Lanka last year.

“We are now a one-stop destination when it comes to all the bilateral international cricket series,” Kaul said.

He added that while the India rights were not a “must-have”, acquiring them would take their position to a “completely different level”.

“As far as our cricket strategy is concerned by and large we are very much there,” he said. “We are already the leaders when it comes to cricket and if we get the BCCI it will just give us the monopoly.”

Owners of dog that died mid-flight after being forced into overhead bin speak out http://mygooglein.blogspot.com

A grieving family is speaking out after, they say, a United Airlines flight attendant forced them to put their dog in an overhead bin, where he died in flight. The 10-month-old French bulldog was kept there for the entire three-and-a-half hour trip from Houston to New York Monday. The airline has apologized.

United Airlines issued a statement accepting full responsibility for the incident, which it says is under investigation. Still, many are wondering how an experienced flight attendant could let this happen, reports CBS News' Kris Van Cleave.
Owners of dog that died mid-flight after being forced into overhead bin speak out http://mygooglein.blogspot.com

"He was a really special dog. It's just sad the way he has to, just leave," said 11-year-old Sophia Ceballos. For Sophia and her mother, Catalina Robledo, Kokito was part of the family,

Robledo put the dog in a carrier but struggled to put Kokito's carrier under the seat in front of her. The family says a flight attendant insisted it go in the overhead bin.

"'It's a dog, it's a dog.' He can't breathe up there.' And she said, 'It doesn't matter, it still goes up there.... She felt the dog and she put him up there," Sophia recalled.

The family says they heard Kokito barking for two hours, then he stopped. They wanted to check on him but couldn't.

"We tried, but there was a lot of turbulence. And we weren't allowed to stand up," Sophia said.

When the flight was over, they found Kokito had died. A fellow passenger posted a photo of the dog, saying, "My heart broke with theirs as I realized he was gone."

"My mom was crying, she was just screaming, she was looking at him," Sophia said.

In a statement United says: "This was a tragic accident that should never have occurred, as pets should never be placed in the overhead bin. We... Express our deepest condolences."

Retired airline captain Denny Kelly says the pitch black overhead bin is dangerous for any live animal.

"There is no circulation at all in there," Kelly said. "They're scared, their heart rate goes up and they use more oxygen. And there's not enough oxygen in the first place, that just makes it worse."

Kokito's owners hope others learn from this death. The family says the flight attendant claimed afterward that she didn't know there was a dog inside the bag. She's been described as distraught. The American Kennel Club says a French bulldog's short face can make its breathing less efficient. They stress easily, increasing their need to breathe.

Rising popularity of full-face snorkel masks raise safety concerns http://mygooglein.blogspot.com

Hawaii is grappling with an alarming increase in snorkel-related deaths. Ten people have died since January. On average, 17 people die each year in Hawaii while snorkeling.

A full-face snorkel mask is at the center of one theory about the rise in deadly incidents. So far this year, that type of gear has been linked to four deaths.

Lifeguards say they are seeing more and more of the full-face snorkel masks. Some tourists CBS News has spoken to say they love them because they're easier to use than conventional mask and snorkels, reports CBS News correspondent Vladimir Duthiers. But safety experts warn there are risks associated with them that people may not know about, and for one man's wife, that warning came too late.

Guy Cooper and his wife, Nancy Peacock, traveled the world together. But on her last trip to the Hawaiian islands, Cooper stayed behind at their home in California. He said it haunts him every day.

"I picture her in the water, frightened, panicking, and trying – struggling with that mask," Cooper said.

An avid snorkeler and a "good swimmer," Peacock was trying out the full-face mask she bought on Amazon. But less than an hour after entering the water, her lifeless body was pulled out by a nearby surfer.

"I started right away thinking about this mask," Cooper said. "Well, 'cause I'm trying to think what – what could have gone wrong."

The masks have a new design that covers the entire face, allowing snorkelers to breathe out of their nose and mouth, unlike the traditional two-piece snorkel equipment.

But some safety experts say it's the design that may make it less safe with greater risk for carbon dioxide buildup that could cause snorkelers to become dizzy or disoriented. Tighter-fitting head straps also may make it harder to pull off in an emergency – something Cooper suspects happened to his wife.

"I wrote to the coroner and I said, 'Wouldn't you want to know what she was using? … The ER never asked those questions, you never asked those questions, apparently no one is asking those questions, and couldn't that be a contributing factor?'" Cooper said.

But until last year, the type of equipment used in snorkel-related deaths or near-deaths was never recorded.

"No one will know if they're dangerous or not until you put it in a database, look for trends," Cooper said.

Ralph Goto recently retired as Honolulu's director of ocean safety after 30 years. He now co-chairs a committee investigating the spike in snorkel-related deaths along with the Hawaii State Department of Health.

"There's the full-faced mask theory. There's issues of pre-existing medical conditions. There's theories of inexperience and all of them have some credence," Goto said. "So we're asking first responders to gather the equipment involved in these cases."

Lifeguards like Kawika Eckart said "more and more people" are using the full-faced masks. He and his team are responsible for the safety of an average of 2,600 visitors each day at Hanauma Bay. He said it's too early to know if they put snorkelers in greater danger.

"We're looking into… if there is a connection to snorkel drownings and the full-face mask," he said, adding that he's tried the masks himself.

"And what'd you think?" Duthiers asked.

"No comment," Eckart said.

One manufacturer of the full face masks, Head USA, said in a statement: "The safety of our customers and the performance of our equipment have always been our first priorities," adding the product "was put through rigorous testing protocols…including the measurement of potential CO2 build-up." The statement went on to say their success "has spawned a number of low-cost copycat masks... whose expertise, design and manufacturing experience are unknown."

It's something that troubles Robert Wintner, founder of Snorkel Bob's, one of Hawaii's top snorkel equipment retailers.

"I get three or four inquiries a week from Chinese manufacturers. 'You must carry these. Please send your address. We'll send samples.' And my response is always the same, 'No, thank you. Please put them in the dumpster,'" Wintner said.

Wintner decided against carrying any of the full-face masks after his researchers tested them.

"They said that the face area heats up and gave them a feeling of claustrophobia," Wintner described. "They could not reach their nose to clear. It's hazardous." Wintner said if you try to take the mask off in a hurry and not thinking clearly, "it can stick."

"There were snorkel fatalities way before there were one-piece masks, so I think we need to look at it in totality… is it the snorkel, is it the mask, and we don't know for certain but we are certainly trying to find out," Goto said.

Cooper may never know exactly what caused his wife's death, but for now, he said, "I just wouldn't want someone else to go through what I went through losing her."

Currently, there are no regulations on snorkel equipment in the U.S. The

The impact of school shootings is being felt across the country https://mygooglein.blogspot.com

The impact of school shootings is being felt across the country, especially with young children.

In Alabama, 12-year-old Javon Davis wrote a will just in case he dies in a school shooting. The sixth grader and his best friend Cameron wrote letters to one another listing what they would leave each other if they died during such an incident.

This Alabama sixth grader says he wrote his will "just in case" he is ever killed in a shooting at school.

Javon’s mother, Mariama Davies, was surprised to hear that her son felt compelled to prepare for his own death.

“It's really hard because he's so young. He just shouldn't have to go through that period, because, for what?," she told CBS News. "He's in sixth grade. You have a lot ahead of you, and these things going on, you shouldn't have to worry about, go through or even think about.”

In his will, Javon left his beloved PlayStation 4, cat, TV and Xbox to his best friend. He ended the letter with the following words, “Dear family, I love you all. You gave me the clothes on my back and you stuck with me all the time. Love, Javon."

Mariama Davies said with all the shootings occurring across the United States it’s the reality of the world, but they won’t live in fear.

"I know it's going to be ok because God got me in his hands," Javon said.

Pi Day 2018 with NASA’s Tasty ‘Pi in the Sky’ Math Challenge http://mygooglein.blogspot.com

Today, NASA is inviting the public to celebrate Pi Day by sharing a series of cosmic calculations for kids and adults to solve.
The “Pi in the Sky” challenge was created by the Education Office of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, and is now in its fifth year. The challenge will feature math problems to calculate for Martian earthquakes, helium rain on Jupiter and the rotation rate of the first interstellar visitor ever discovered, asteroid ‘Oumuamua. The topics of last year’s Pi Day challenge included craters with butterfly-shaped ejecta, or tossed material, and the total solar eclipse.
Pi is a number whose digits go on forever, but it’s most popularly known by the first three: 3.14 (hence March 14). It is a mathematical constant often denoted by the symbol π. Pi comes in handy when determining the circumference or the surface area of a round celestial body. It also helps engineers and scientists program the precise orbits of satellites and spacecraft. such as the impressive pirouettes the Cassini spacecraft performed before its “death dive.
Ota Lutz, a senior education specialist at JPL, believes everyone should attempt the Pi Day Challenge, even if they aren’t familiar with these math tools. Students in grades 5 through 12 are especially invited to participate, and JPL offers resources for educators who want to use the math problems in their classrooms.
“All of the problems in the ‘Pi in the Sky’ challenge are real problems that JPL scientists and engineers solve using pi,” Lutz said in a statement.
Solutions to the illustrated questions will be posted on March 15, according to NASA. Pi Daychallenge problems from previous years can be found on the website, too.
